What’s Coming Up? (January 2017)

Happy 2017, everyone! I hope you had an awesome holiday break! High School starts back this Sunday, January 8, and The Middle starts back up on Wednesday, January 11. And while snow and cold weather are coming up for everyone, here is what is coming up specifically for the Student Ministries this month!

Before we jump into the big topic for this month, I wanted to quickly remind you that our Deep Freeze winter retreat at Berea is coming up on February 3-5. Those who have signed up, please get your final payment and paperwork into me by January 29. You can also make your payment online. Just head to the receipt you received in email when you registered. If you need me to send it to you again, just let me know!

Also, the applications are online for our summer mission trip with workcampNE (July 9-15, 2017). All current 8th graders through college students are invited to join us. Just click here or head to the event page in the RCC mobile app to sign up today. The deadline is February 14.

We’re starting a brand new series for High School and The Middle called, “I’M IN!” For all you parents, you to experience this series right alongside your students, because our Sunday morning worship will also be in this series throughout January! It’ll be a great time to come together on the same thing at the same time for all students and parents!

I’M IN Series Description: “Are you in?” It’s a question we all answer over and over again. When there’s a party, when our coach says it’s time for tryouts, when we’re offered a summer job, when our friends go to the movies, or when someone invites us to church, we all have the chance to decide if we’re “in” or “out” for that particular activity. Sometimes the answer is an easy, “Count me in!” Other times it’s tougher. There are good reasons on both sides. Some of Jesus’ friends were faced with the same decision of whether they were “in” or “out.” They had good reasons to join the Jesus movement, but they also had some pretty compelling reasons to step out—things like doubt, guilt, pride, and the fear of what they might miss. As we get to know these sometimes famous and devoted followers, we’ll talk about the decision they faced, why they could have walked away, and what led them to say, “I’m in.”

Each week, we’ll look at a different friend of Jesus at The Middle and High School Ministry. Here’s the plan, in case you want to read ahead:

  • Week 1: Mary Magdalene (Jan. 8 for High School; Jan. 11 for The Middle)
  • Week 2: James (Jan. 15 for High School; Jan. 18 for The Middle)
  • Week 3: Thomas (Jan. 22 for High School; Jan. 25 for The Middle)
  • Week 4: Matthew (Jan. 29 for High School; Feb. 1 for The Middle)

For all you parents, we’ve got another round of our Parent Cue for  you to use as you take the discussion home. We hope it can be a great resource to aid in conversations between your spouse, kids, and even extended family!

Next month, we’ll start into two different series with The Middle and High School. Our 5-8th graders will be in a 3-week series called “Road Trip,” all about the Apostle Paul. Meanwhile, our 9-12th graders will be doing a couple different things including a week all about college preparation and also begin a discussion-based series on social issues and the Bible (more on this in next month’s blog).

What’s Coming Up? (November 2016)

rccstudents-whatscomingup-nov2016-1280x400

November… The month of Thanksgiving, turkey, and Black Friday deals! Well, at least that’s what it has become–things that happen near the end of the month. Fortunately, there’s the rest of the month we can fill with great Bible teaching and community at The Middle and High School Ministry!

Below, you will find a quick run-down of the month’s happenings. As always, feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Also, know that any student is welcome to attend, even if he/she has never come before! We design our student ministries to be places for all students, no matter where they are in their faith journey.

Without further delay, here’s what’s coming up…

On November 2, The Middle will finish up their “The Who in the How” series from last month, but then both groups will launch into a series called “Upside Down” for the rest of the month!

Have you ever thought something worked one way, only to find it didn’t? Like maybe as a young kid you thought the bathtub drain was a death trap. Then you learned it couldn’t actually suck you into the sewer and that was a game changer. Or maybe you were sure that the closet should be avoided because monsters lived there. Then you learned they didn’t. That changed your morning routine for sure. Any time you learn new information, it can turn your world upside down.

Jesus had a habit of doing just that with the people closest to Him. He often did or said things that were the exact opposite of what anyone expected. He’d take ideas that everyone agreed with, ideas that everyone would say, “Of course, that’s just the way it is,” and He’d flip them upside down. He would tell people to do the exact opposite of what they thought. This was especially true when Jesus talked about how we treat people, specifically people who like us, people who don’t, and people we don’t even notice.

The way it will break down is like this:

  • November 2: The Who in the How – Part 4 at The Middle
  • November 6: Upside Down – Part 1 at High School
  • November 9: Upside Down – Part 1 at The Middle
  • November 13: Upside Down – Part 2 at High School
  • November 16: Upside Down – Part 2 at The Middle
  • November 20: Upside Down – Part 3 at High School
  • November 23: The Middle will NOT meet due to Thanksgiving
  • November 27: Special Activity at High School (more details coming soon)
  • November 30: Upside Down – Part 3 at The Middle

Parents, here are your “Parent Cues” for both groups. Just click on the one that fits for your student(s).

The only other thing to make sure you put on your calendars are two big events for all students:

  • The Deep Freeze 2017 final deadline is December 4. Please register online by then in order to secure your spot! For more information and to register, click this link.
  • The New Year’s Eve Overnighter is currently in planning phases! You won’t want to miss this all-night party with games, food, worship, and more! We’ll share more details very soon!
